Google is pre-selling $899 Googlebooks so Android users get a MacBook-shaped laptop

Google opened pre-orders Monday for Googlebook, a new Android laptop line (pay now, wait for stock) starting at $899, with first U.S. units due in shops October 4 and Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia on October 5, The Next Web reports.

Only the $899 entry price is published so far. No European prices are out yet.

Five models ship one each from Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, Dell, and HP. Acer has the only convertible. ASUS lists a 2.2 lb machine. Lenovo brings a 15-inch panel. Shared baseline kit includes 16GB of RAM, with some configs at 32GB, OLED touchscreens up to 2.8K, aluminum or magnesium or carbon-fiber cases, backlit keyboards, glass haptic trackpads, and up to six speakers.

Buyers pick Intel Core Ultra Series 3 or Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite. Each chip carries an NPU, the slice that runs on-device AI without always calling the cloud, rated above 45 TOPS, a speed rating for that slice, on TNW’s page. 9to5Google prints the same class of chips as 40+ TOPS.

The software pitch is phone continuity plus Gemini features live in the chassis. TechCrunch frames Monday’s launch, after a May preview, as a bet that Gemini features like Magic Cursor / Magic Pointer, Rambler dictation cleanup, vibe-coded widgets, and Gemini Spark / Live are enough reason to buy new hardware.

Devices run Android with a desktop Chrome browser and ChromeOS elements. The bundle includes 12 months of Google AI Pro with 5TB of storage and Gemini Advanced, three months of YouTube Premium plus Adobe Photoshop, and one year of GeForce NOW.

Security leans on ChromeOS architecture, Titan root of trust, and a Level 5 pKVM hypervisor. That hypervisor is a locked-off virtual computer inside the laptop so developer tools cannot easily break the main system. Google’s page calls out Claude Code and Antigravity CLI as examples of what that walled Linux can host.

9to5Google adds the continuity list Android owners will feel: passwords, Wi-Fi, and messages following the phone, Android 17 “Continue On” plus Cast My Apps, a Files app that reads phone storage, and 10 years of automatic updates with quarterly feature drops. Claimed battery life runs up to 14 hours of video or 16 hours of web browsing. MediaTek-powered Googlebooks are “coming in the future.”

The Verge hands-on describes Googlebook OS as an Android codebase with a ChromeOS-like layout and Material 3 Expressive. Best continuity needs Android 17 on most Pixels and some flagships. Google promises a core set keeps working as phones age. John Maletis, Google’s head of laptops and tablets, said the machines were designed to “work seamlessly with your Android phone.”

Chromebooks were the cheap school fleet. TechCrunch points at the roughly 50 million Chromebooks Google has said sit in K-12 classrooms as the longer funnel. Googlebook is a different bet: five outside chassis, one phone-shaped software stack, and Gemini as the reason an Android owner opens the wallet for a MacBook-shaped machine.

Google is licensing the laptop body to the PC brands and owning the account, the apps, and the AI pointer that make the phone feel continuous. The $899 sticker is the entry. The real product is whether Gemini inside the chassis beats Gemini in a browser tab hard enough to move metal.
