OpenAI ships Dots, always-on agents with their own cloud computer

OpenAI on Tuesday launched Dots at DevDay, always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra that each get their own cloud computer, connect to over 4,000 apps through plugins, and roll out first across ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium, and Enterprise in eligible markets, the company said in its product post.

A Dot can work toward goals around the clock, learn from feedback, and stay reachable in ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams, including on a voice call. The first Dot is included with Pro or Business Premium at no extra cost. Enterprise workspaces, including Edu and Healthcare, get the beta when an admin turns it on. OpenAI says conversations with a Dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits, while tasks the Dot starts in Codex or ChatGPT Work still do.

Users choose which apps a Dot can touch, set Custom Rules for when it acts alone and when it must ask, and can open the Dot's computer at any time to inspect the work. Auto-review checks actions that could move accounts or share information. Sensitive moves such as changing a password stay with the human. When the Dot is idle, OpenAI says proactive research stays read-only on connected apps so it cannot send messages, change content, or drive a browser without permission.

An early tester's Dot noticed a forgotten invoice for a publication, prepared the bill, and sent it after approval. Inside OpenAI's own demos, the company describes Dots chasing bugs in Slack, turning designs into working apps, and keeping planning cycles in sync while people stay on the decisions that need them.

TechCrunch adds that OpenAI is working with Microsoft on Agent 365 security controls for specialist dots, and that text-message support is coming soon. Specialist dots are a preview: company-provisioned identities for procurement, invoice processing, support, and other systems of record, starting in focused enterprise pilots.

Fortune and Business Insider put a new $500-a-month plan with the highest usage allowance beside a cut to the $200 Pro usage allowance. More dots and higher output caps are framed as later paid options. ChatGPT Space, a collaborative docs and slides workspace, shipped as a same-day companion product.

OpenAI is selling background work with a visible desk drawer. The company still wants the Pro seat to trust an agent that keeps going when you look away.

The DevDay product is the agent that keeps a desk warm while you stay on the approvals.
