Broadcom agrees to lend Anthropic up to $42 billion for TPU leases

Broadcom has agreed to lend Anthropic up to $42 billion to finance infrastructure spending tied to a five-year lease of TPU computing capacity, CNBC reports, citing a Reuters exclusive drawn from Anthropic's IPO prospectus.

The convertible notes, loans that can turn into Anthropic stock, could finance about a third of Anthropic's $125.2 billion commitment for those TPUs, Google and Broadcom's custom AI accelerators. Broadcom could designate a financing partner. Anthropic says it does not expect any notes to be sold before it completes its IPO. Next-generation TPU access under an April partnership with Broadcom and Google is aimed to begin in 2027.

CNBC frames Broadcom's role as spanning compute supply, equipment leasing, and financing, a deeper stack than cloud partners that mostly host Claude. Anthropic stands to become Broadcom's largest compute customer in 2027. Broadcom projects about $115 billion in AI semiconductor revenue for fiscal 2027 and $230 billion for fiscal 2028. Analysts quoted in the piece cast the facility as Broadcom following Nvidia's playbook of putting balance sheet behind chip demand.

Anthropic disclosed that Broadcom's dual role as hardware supplier and financing partner creates potential conflicts of interest that might affect access to the computing power the lab needs, and that Broadcom pricing and hardware decisions could constrain procurement. Broadcom did not comment. Anthropic declined to comment. Related to the convertible debt, Anthropic deposited cash in a restricted account for Broadcom's benefit in April 2026 and may have to add more in certain cases. Certain payment or performance defaults could make a substantial portion of lease obligations due immediately while limiting use of the $42 billion facility to cover those bills.

The prospectus is already pricing a public company that could be valued at $2 trillion while the same document warns that the chip vendor financing the racks might also decide how hard those racks are to get.
