OpenAI is selling the conversation after the ad click

OpenAI said Wednesday it has introduced AI-powered tools for advertisers and begun testing business-sponsored agents, Anzar Mehraj at Reuters reports. Sponsored Agents let users start conversations with a business-paid chatbot after interacting with ads in ChatGPT, then visit the company’s website.

The agents will be clearly labeled and remain separate from ChatGPT’s independent responses and the user’s original chat. The feature is being tested with select U.S. advertisers.

A Sponsored Agent is a chatbot a business pays for that chats with you inside ChatGPT after an ad. Ads Manager is the dashboard advertisers use to build and track campaigns. A CRM is customer-relationship software for contacts, leads, and follow-ups.

ChatGPT Ads Manager lets advertisers use natural-language prompts to create, update, and analyze campaigns. It can turn a website or campaign brief into a campaign, review performance, and send recommendations. It can suggest copy and images based on a landing page and campaign objective.

Optional AI text-customization can tailor existing headlines and descriptions to conversation context and translate copy into a user’s preferred language.

HubSpot is OpenAI’s first CRM partner. Shopify is its first e-commerce partner. The Shopify app launches internationally in markets where ChatGPT Ads is available, beginning September 23.

Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable quotes OpenAI: Sponsored Agents “let people start a conversation with a business-sponsored agent after clicking an ad in ChatGPT.” That conversation is “distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and separate from the original conversation.”

OpenAI also emailed advertisers a list of Ads Manager updates: conversion optimization with impression billing, charging when the ad is seen while aiming at purchases, now generally available, flexible attribution windows, the period after an ad when a sale can receive credit, granular platform targeting, ads aimed by app versus web, Shopify and HubSpot integrations, AI-assisted ad creation in testing, and an Event Quality Score, a grade for whether conversion tracking is set up correctly.

Unite.AI notes U.S. Shopify merchants can use the ChatGPT Ads app from September 16, with international from September 23. OpenAI’s advertiser page, as Unite.AI printed it, offers $500 in ad credit when they spend $500.

Independent answers stay in the original thread. The paid agent gets a new labeled chat, then a path to the company’s site.

The first partners are the CRM and the checkout. The signup bait is a matched $500 credit. The same dashboard that writes the ad now hands you the salesperson.
